Officers

Each officer is elected for a one year term and serves on the Executive Council. Each such officer shall hold office until the next annual meeting of the members and until a successor has been duly elected.

Mark Thompson

MD, FACS

President
One could say Dr. Thompson's career choice was meant to be: He is a fourth-generation doctor in the South Bend, Indiana community. After graduating from high school, he couldn't wait to start working in the field. In fact, the day after he received his diploma, he eagerly took a job as an orderly in the operating room at Memorial Hospital.
Today, his life and his passion for medicine have come full circle: Dr. Thompson is a board-certified general surgeon, leading highly skilled surgical teams to perform lifesaving and life-changing surgeries.
"I really enjoy taking care of people," Dr. Thompson said. "My goal is for patients to feel comfortable and confident in their care. I'd like for patients to know that their best interest is all that matters to me."
"At Beacon, the ability to collaborate with our surgical care team is outstanding," he said. "We have a unified focus so the patient has everything he or she needs for an optimal outcome."
President-Elect

Andrew Eppstein MD, FACS

Dr. Eppstein, MD is a practicing Surgeon in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Eppstein graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2002 and has been in practice for 14 years. He completed a residency at Indiana University School of Medicine. He currently practices at Roudebush VA Medical Center and is affiliated with Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center.
He is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He has been in practice since 2009. He is experienced in minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, acute disease, and clinical studies. He has adjunct faculty appointments at Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Surgery and Indiana State University Physician's Assistants Program.
Secretary-Treasurer

Jennifer Choi MD, FACS

Dr. Choi currently serves as associate dean of graduate medical education and professor of Clinical Surgery. Dr. Choi received her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine where she also completed her General Surgery residency and a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery.
Her clinical focus is minimally invasive surgery and includes bariatric surgery, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernias and all types of abdominal wall hernias.
Dr. Choi’s research focus is surgical education and bariatric surgery. She has co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Choi is a member of SAGES, and the Association of Surgical Education. She currently serves as the secretary of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS).
Past-President

Dimitrios Stefanidis

MD, PhD, FACS, FASMBS

Dimitrios Stefanidis, MD, PhD, FACS, FASMBS is a professor of surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, and serves as the chief of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery and vice chair of education for the Department of Surgery. Dr. Stefanidis received his medical school degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, and did his doctoral work at the University of Bonn in Germany. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, a surgical simulation research fellowship at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA, and his minimally invasive bariatric surgery fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Stefanidis joined IU after 10 years at Carolinas Healthcare System in Charlotte, North Carolina where he had helped establish Carolinas Simulation Center, a dually accredited education institute by the ACS and SSH.
