Benefits of Membership

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) exerts its influence at the community level through its local Chapters. Some of the benefits promoted by the ACS that are generalized to all Chapters include offering a medium through which surgical experiences may be presented and discussed; providing a common ground for specialties in various branches of surgery to communicate with each other; and creating a forum through which young surgeons, who have not yet gained membership in more limited surgical societies, can share their thoughts and experiences with more established surgeons. Additionally, members can work together with other state groups that are concerned with the socioeconomic and legislative aspects of heathcare in their communities. Why should I join the Indiana Chapter? 1) By becoming a member of the Chapter, you are showing your support of the goalsof the American College of Surgeons at the local level. 2) The Chapter is governed by a Council composed of 15 Councilors from throughout the state, allowing urban and rural surgeons to be representated. Get to know the Councilors from your area and let your voice be heard. 3) We are represented at the national level by two Governors of the College who sit on the Chapter Council. 4) The Chapter continues to make state and federal advocacy a top priority. Each year the Chapter holds its annual "Day at the Capitol" Advocacy Event providing members with an opportunity to hear about proposed legislation and to meet with their legislators at the State Capitol. Each spring, several member surgeons and residents attend the annual ACS Leadership and Advocacy Summit in Washington D.C., to meet with national legislators. 5) Chapter leadership maintains relationships with other state medical organizations, so that common issues facing physicians in the state can be discussed and acted upon. 6) The Chapter, in cooperation with the IU Department of Surgery, holds two dinner meetings per year with guest visiting professors. In February, the Jesseph lecture, and in November, the Moore lecture. These meetings are excellent opportunities to network with your peers. 7) The Chapter holds an Annual Scientific meeting that usually offers 6-8 hours of CME credit. 8) The Chapter offers members the opportunity to be involved in leadership.
