2025 Fall Dinner and Will C. Moore Lecture November 18, 2025 Indianapolis Marriott Downtown

2025 Visiting Professor

C. William Schwab, MD, FACS, FRCS (H) Glas. C. William “Bill” Schwab is an international contributor to the field of trauma surgery. Dr. Schwab received his surgical training in the United States Navy and served on active duty from 1970-1980. Bill is well known for his accomplishments as a clinical surgeon, medical educator, champion for injury prevention and expert in trauma systems development. While founding the trauma and flight programs at the University of Pennsylvania, the Penn team pioneered many aspects of damage control surgery, an approach to life-threatening injury now integral to civilian and military trauma surgery worldwide. In 2024, Bill received the Distinguished Lifetime Military Contribution Award from the American College of Surgeons in recognition of his many efforts to improve outcomes of those wounded during combat and in civilian settings. Dr. Schwab has over 250 peer-reviewed publications, has co-edited four textbooks on clinical trauma care, ballistic injury, and damage control management. Bill is an honorary member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Scotland (Glasgow), Swedish Surgical Association and European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. He has served as the President of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care, Vice Chair of the Committee on Trauma (ACS) and served on numerous governmental, academic, and higher education boards. The academic division at Penn, under his leadership, developed an interdisciplinary faculty that include basic science, translational and clinical research programs supported by NIH, CDC, and funding from the public health sectors. A characteristic of the scholastic mission championed by Bill was the engagement and direct support to scientists and clinicians from the international trauma and injury communities. The post-graduate training programs in trauma, emergency and critical care surgery have graduated over 140 surgeons and physicians, many of whom serve as well-known leaders in academic medicine, military, and global surgery. Bill has served on two National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine committees to evaluate and recommend improvements in emergency care and, most recently, enhancing civilian and military partnerships to expand trauma care and disaster response. During the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the division at Penn experienced multiple deployments of faculty and graduate fellows. These collective experiences were foundational for his Scudder Oration “white paper” entitled, “The Winds of War: Military-Civilian Partnership for Training, Education and Readiness;” a provocative call for embedding military trauma teams in America’s busiest trauma centers. In 2017, the University of Pennsylvania honored Bill with the establishment of The C. William Schwab Endowed Professorship and Chair in Traumatology, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgery.
